But, the true star is Fina Strazza who plays Kristin’s (Lacey Chabert) daughter, Emily. The leads, Lacey Chabert and Brennan Elliott have a palpable, lovable chemistry and are also joined by Kathy Najimy and Mariah Carey herself. This unexpected gem actually has the ability to transcend niche network product and venture into yearly holiday rewatch territory. The look and feel of that hometown, Silver Falls, is just as warm, cozy, and Christmas-y as it sets out to be (infamous Hallmark fake snow and all). ![]() The movie visits the familiar Hallmark trope of “woman returns to her hometown after being in the big city” but with a twist. This plot point puts a unique and welcome spin on the season of love and togetherness that we don't normally get to see.Ī Christmas Melody was destined to be a holiday favorite, because it was directed by Mariah Carey, a Christmas icon known for her monopoly over holiday music playlists for years running. Vanessa goes on a search to find her biological family, and the rest is history. The movie's protagonist, Vanessa ( Aimee Teegarden) grew up in the foster care system and now works as a social worker in the system she was raised in. What makes this movie stand out, though, is its themes about foster care. This film will quench your thirst for a more serious, tug-at-your-heartstrings kind of holiday movie watching experience, but it's still a sweet Christmas rom-com at heart with the chops to make it onto your list of yearly re-watches. One of the best holiday movies from 2021 was My Christmas Family Tree. ![]() There are quite a few movies to choose from to give you a more inclusive, well-rounded, and realistic dose of holiday cheer, and we're expecting the same from this year's lineup. As a result of said push, the recent holiday seasons have brought about more diverse casts and characters, as well as storylines that reflect many more real experiences than just the thirty-year-old woman who heads to her small hometown from the big city and finds love with a local flannel-clad man. Over the course of the past few years, the Hallmark Channel has made a major push to diversify their previously notoriously straight, white storylines. ![]()
